6 Tips for a Healthy Summer

The official start of summer is just about here, and we’re all excited. It’s almost time for parasols, outdoor restaurant patios with friends, and one-on-one dates between you and the beach for some much-needed tanning sessions. We all know how to enjoy the summer, but what about our health? Maybe you’ve set health goals in the New Year, stuck with them through the spring, and are looking for ways to keep it up through the summer. Or perhaps you want to kick start your health priorities now with the warm season. In this article, we’ll review simple and accessible strategies to staying healthy this summer.

Stay hydrated.

Even for the best of us, drinking water can get monotonous sometimes. Though humans are composed of 60% water, sometimes it doesn’t feel natural to drink a great deal of H2O. Here are a few tips you can follow to improve your hydration habits:


  • Drink out of a clear water bottle: This way you can easily see and keep tabs on how much you’re drinking throughout the day.
  • Flavor your water with fresh fruit: Give water some interest with a natural flavor punch.
  • Eat hydrating foods: Consume more fruits and vegetables like cucumbers and apples to improve hydration through food.
  • Use hydration supplements: If you’re feeling particularly dehydrated, hydration supplements may be a good choice for you. Just beware of salt-based hydration supplements if you already have a high-salt diet, as the extra salt may be problematic.

Wear comfortable footwear.

In the summer, it may be tempting to sport strappy high heels that you consider “worth the pain,” or cheap, cushionless sandals that you consider “a bargain.” But when choosing your footwear this summer, be sure to consider comfort. Our footwear can not only influence posture, muscle strain, and more, it can also encourage or deter us from engaging in an active lifestyle. Be sure to try your footwear on in the store, walk around in them thoroughly, and make sure they provide the right amount of support and comfort for the next time you’re walking to a concert, the farmers market, or brunch with friends. Remember sunscreen.

We all love the sun, but the thing is — it loves us back. Prevent painful sun damage, premature skin aging effects, and the risk of skin cancer down the line by wearing the appropriate amount of sunscreen. Just one more way to ensure a fun and carefree summer for you and your friends.

Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Almost everything is better in the warm months, and food is no exception. Take advantage of the following in-season foods this summer:

Whether that means going to the nearest beach or swimming laps in your local pool, summer is a great time to swim for fun, as a workout, or both! Use this opportunity to enjoy the refreshing water on a hot day, whether that be to relax and unwind or get in a little exercise.
