There are many different forms of meditation, all of which offer specific approaches to and techniques for achieving mental clarity and peace of mind. Many forms of meditation require closing your eyes, but not mirror gazing.

Mirror gazing is a practice that helps build self-compassion, self-confidence, and self-esteem. In this article we’ll explain what mirror gazing is, why you should try it, and how it works.

What is mirror gazing?

Mirror gazing is the meditative practice of looking at your reflection in the mirror

while focusing on yourself and your life.

While other meditation methods focus on internal peace, mirror gazing starts on the outside.
By accepting and loving what we see in the mirror, we are able to reflect on and understand ourselves better.

Why should I try mirror gazing?

Mirror gazing helps you understanding yourself, specifically in the following three ways:

Self-awareness

Staring at your reflection in the mirror gives you the opportunity to confront any feelings you may have compartmentalized recently.

By looking at yourself, you often realize the extent of these feelings or other things you didn’t realize were the actual root of the problem.

Self-compassion

We all have flaws, because no one on Earth is perfect. It’s how we choose to address those flaws that matters. By spending time with your flaws you learn to acknowledge them. You realize that they exist, whether you’re comfortable with them or not.

The goal here is to learn to be kind to yourself, and approach your flaws with compassion.

Self-confidence

By acknowledging yourself and your flaws you become more comfortable with yourself over time.

This familiarity, compassion, and awareness eventually develops into confidence and self-esteem, which is one of the biggest advantages of mirror gazing.

How do I start mirror gazing?

Here a step-by-step breakdown of mirror gazing:

Find a quiet place…

in front of the mirror and get comfortable. This might entail sitting on a pillow or bringing a comfortable seat over to sit in. Set a timer for 10 minutes (or however long you’d like) and begin.

Breathe deeply.

Slow your breathing down and breathe as deep as you can, letting the tension in your body fade away with each breath.

Focus on the reflection of your eyes.

Try to read the emotion behind them, as well as in the rest of your body.
Feel any stress, where it is, and try to ease the tension.

Listen to your inner thoughts.

Follow your inner dialogue and see where it takes you. Take time on each of these topics and let the thoughts develop. This time is designated for understanding and working through these thoughts and internal problems, so take as much time as you need, and don’t rush.

Pay attention to where your thoughts lead you, because they will help you understand yourself better.

Work through discomfort.

You will undoubtedly face some uncomfortable thoughts and feelings during your mirror gazing session, but the most important part of this practice is working through them.

Stay where you are, and work through them while maintaining your focus on your reflection in the mirror.

When beginning your mirror gazing practice, remember to be kind to yourself.

Mirror gazing is a powerful exercise that can help us understand ourselves better,
but only if we maintain an open and kind mind.
